What to read before sleeping (Part 1)
When getting into bed after a long tiring day, we naturally just want to fall asleep. However, it’s a beautiful habit to remember Allah Ta’ala and connect with Him before we fall asleep.
Our amazing Nabi ﷺ has taught us many practices, Adhkar, Dua’s and Surahs from the Qur’an through which we can connect with Allah Ta’ala and gain many amazing benefits. To make it easy we will learn a few of these at a time.
Lets begin by reading the following three portions of the Qur’an:
1.) Recite the last three Quls (This is Surah Ikhlas, Surah Falaq and Surah Naas) and blow in the hands with a light spitting gesture and rub them over the body.
Sayyidah ‘Aishah رضي الله عنها says that when our beloved Nabi ﷺ went to his bed every night, he would put his cupped hands together, then blow into them, then recite into them Qul Huwa Allahu Ahad, Qul A’udhu bi Rabbil Falaq and Qul A’udhu bi Rabbin Nas (i.e. the last three surahs of the Qur’an), then he would wipe his hands over as much of his body as he could, starting with his head and face, and the front part of his body. He would do that three times. (Bukhari)
2.) Recite Surah Kafiroon and gain protection from Shirk.
Our beloved Nabi ﷺ said to me, “Recite ‘Qul Ya Ayyuhal Kafiroon (Surah Kafiroon), before sleeping, for it is a protection from Shirk (polytheism).” (Abu Dawood)
3.) Read Ayatul Kursi and be protected.
Abu Hurayrah رضي الله عنه said that Rasulullah ﷺ put me in charge of guarding the collected Zakah of Ramadhan. Someone came and started to rummage in the food. I took hold of him and said, I will surely take you to Rasulullah ﷺ.… He said, When you go to your bed, recite Ayatul Kursi and you will be protected by Allah, and no devil will come near you until morning. Rasulullah ﷺ, “He told you the truth even though he is a liar. That was Shaytan .” (Bukhari)
