Daily Lesson 72

This Weeks Dua

Dua for wearing clothes

Clothing is an essential part of our daily living and not only is it used to cover our bodies and allow us to remain modest, but it also helps us to keep warm and adorn ourselves.

It is therefore important that we show our gratefulness to Allah Ta’aala for this very great blessing.

So how can we thank Allah Ta’ala? Well, we can start by reading the following beautiful dua taught to us by our amazing Nabi ﷺ.

Dua when wearing clothes

الْحَمْدُ للهِ الَّذِي كَسَانِي هَذَا الثَّوْبَ وَرَزَقَنِيهِ مِنْ غَيْرِ حَوْلٍ مِّنِّي وَلاَ قُوَّةٍ

Alhmadulillahil ladhee kasaani haadhath thawba warazaqaneehi min ghayri hawlim minnee walaa quwwah

Translation: All praise is due to Allah who has clothed me with this garment and provided me with it without any effort or power of mine.

Download pdf and read every day before wearing clothes

That’s it! This short and simple dua, if read each time we wear clothes (keeping its meaning in mind) will Insha’Allah help us to verbally thank Allah Ta’aala.

So let’s learn this dua and start reading it immediately.

What’s best is there are many other benefits of reading this dua too. Let’s look at a few:

Few benefits of this special dua:

1) We will be following a Sunnah of our beloved Nabi ﷺ.

2) We will be making zikr of Allah Ta’aala

3) We will be thanking Allah Ta’aala and as a result, Allah Ta’aala will give us more.

4) We will be humbling ourselves before Allah Ta’aala and reminding ourselves that everything comes from Allah Ta’aala alone.

5) As found in a hadeeth our past and future (minor) sins will be forgiven every time we read this dua after wearing our clothes! (Abu Dawood)

Etiquettes related to clothing:

1) Modesty (having shame) is a big part of our deen and therefore the clothes we wear must always be modest. Clothing should do the job of covering the satar (area of the body which must be covered and not revealed to others).

2) Do not be wasteful and extravagant. Try to use clothes for as long as possible. If it is wearable and can easily be repaired, one should do so, rather than going out and buying new clothing.

3) Like clothing, wealth too is a great blessing of Allah Ta’aala and should not be carelessly spent on clothing due to fashion or labels. We should remember the purpose of clothing and buy only what is required to fulfil our need.

4) Do not wear clothing to show off to others or out of pride.

5) Simplicity does not mean being unclean or careless about one’s appearance. It is, in fact, something liked by Allah Ta’aala that we maintain high levels of cleanliness and beautify ourselves.

“Allah is beautiful and likes beauty.” (Sahih Muslim)

6) Women should be mindful not to wear tight revealing clothing and men should be mindful to keep the lower garment above the ankles. White is the preferred colour especially for men, as this has been praised in the ahadeeth. However, when leaving the house darker colours, especially black, are best for women as they are more concealing.

7) Women should not go out in public after wearing perfume as this attracts the attention of men and this has been forbidden.

8) When wearing clothes, begin from the right side, and when removing clothes begin from the left side.

9) Read the prescribed sunnah dua when wearing one’s clothes.

10) When wearing new clothes one should read:

الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ الَّذِي كَسَانِي مَا أُوَارِي بِهِ عَوْرَتِي، وَأَتَجَمَّلُ بِهِ فِي حَيَاتِي

Alhamdu Lillahiladhi Kasani Ma Uwari Bihi ‘Aurati Wa Atajammalu bihi fi Hayati

Translation: Praise be to Allah Who has clothed me in something with which I conceal my nakedness and adorn myself in my life. (Tirmidhi)

11) When seeing someone wearing new clothes one should say:

تُبْـلِي وَيُـخْلِفُ اللهُ تَعَالٰى

Tublee wayukh lifullahu ta’aala

Translation : May you wear it out (until it becomes old and completely used) and May Allah Ta’ala replace it (with another garment). (Abu Dawud)

12) When removing clothes, do so in privacy and not in front of others.

13) Both men and women should not imitate the clothing of the opposite gender as this has been forbidden.

Did you know?

By reading the following dua when seeing someone with new clothes, not only will we be making dua for the person’s new clothes but Ulama have said that we will also be making du’a that Allah Ta’aala grants them a long life!
