What happens when you backbite

By Mawlana Junayd Makda Sahib

What happens when you backbite?

On one occasion everyone was fasting when someone came to our beloved Nabi ﷺ and said, “O Rasulullah ﷺ, there are two women who are finding the fast very difficult. They are feeling shy to ask you for permission to break their fast. Please give them permission.”

Our beloved Nabi ﷺ turned away from this person. So, this person asked again but our beloved Nabi ﷺ did not answer and again turned away from him. When this person asked for the third time, our beloved Nabi ﷺ said, “They did not fast. They were eating the flesh of people (they were backbiting). Go and ask them to vomit.”

This man went and told those two women to vomit. When they vomited, blood and pieces of flesh came out. He returned and told our beloved Nabi ﷺ of what happened. Our beloved Nabi ﷺ said, “If that blood and flesh remained in their stomachs, they would have entered the fire of Jahannam.”

Moral:

From this story, we learn how severe backbiting is. When we backbite, we are in fact eating the flesh of that person.

We also learn that backbiting affects our fasts and will lead us to enter into Jahannam.

So, we must never talk behind someone’s back about something if they came to know of, they would be upset by it.
