Maintain Family Ties

لَا يَدْخُلُ الجَنَّةَ قَاطِعٌ

Sayyiduna Jubayr Ibn Mut’im رضي الله عنه narrates that our Beloved Nabi ﷺ said, “The one who breaks ties will not enter Paradise.”

Abu Dawud

Explanation

Being kind to relatives and keeping good relations with them is an extremely important part of Islam and something our beloved Nabi ﷺ spoke of often.

From this hadeeth, we learn its importance from the fact that entry into Jannah is dependent on keeping good relations!

In another hadeeth, our beloved Nabi ﷺ teaches us two hidden benefits of keeping good family ties. He says:

“Whosoever desires to have expansion in his sustenance and a prolonged life should treat his relatives with kindness.” (Bukhari & Muslim)

To help us keep good family ties our beloved Nabi ﷺ has said:

“Join ties with the one that cuts ties off from you, forgive the one that has oppressed you and extend good treatment to the one who has ill-treated you.” (Ahmad)

Keeping Good family relations includes:

1) Regularly visiting/ phoning one another.

2) Assisting and helping whenever possible.

3) Being there in times of need.

4) Exchanging gifts.

5) Whenever families are not on talking terms, finding a solution.

6) Overlooking the fault or neglect from one another.

7) Keeping low expectations.

8) Making dua for one another.

Things that break family ties:

1) Holding malice/grudges (ill feelings).

2) Reminding one another of family disputes.

3) Gossip and backbiting.

4) Jealousy.

5) Misunderstandings.

6) Neglecting one another.

7) Doing things for show.
