Let us learn some sunnah acts we can do on this very special day:

On the day of Eid there are plenty of opportunities for us to follow some beautiful Sunnats of our beloved Nabi ﷺ which are specific to the day of Eid.

Here are some sunnah acts for Eidul Adha:

Night Before Eid

We should worship Allah this night as it is known as the night of prize giving!

Sayyiduna Ubu Umarah رضي الله عنه relates that Rasulullah ﷺ said:

Whoever stays awake and performs ibadah on the night of the two ‘Ids, with hope for abundant reward (from Allah ta’ala), his heart will not die on the day (i.e. Qiyamah) when all hearts will be dead. (At-Targhib)

To eat Udhiya meat after the Eid Salah

After returning from Eid salah it is sunnah to eat Udhiya (Qurbani) meat.

1) For Eidul Fitr it is sunnah to eat some dates before the Eid Salah

2) For Eidul Adha it is sunnah to eat some Udhiya Meat after the Eid salah

We find this practice from the following two hadeeth of our beloved Nabi ﷺ:

Sayyiduna Abdullah Ibn Abbas رضي الله عنه said:

Sayyiduna Buraydah رضي الله عنه reports that Nabi ﷺ would not go for the Eidul Fitr Salah without eating something. On the day of Eidul Adha, he would not eat anything until he returned [from the Eid Salah].’

(Tirmidhi)

In another similar hadeeth, there is the addition of:

‘… On the day of Eidul Adha, he would not eat anything until he returned [from the ‘Eid Salah], and (would) eat from his animal of sacrifice. (Dara Qutni)

To express and show happiness

Hafiz Ibn Hajar Al ‘Asqalani رحمه الله‎‎ says:

Expressing happiness on ‘Eid, is from the shi’aar (salient features ) of Islam

(Fathul Baari)

To do ghusl, wear ones best clothes and apply Itr

Sayyiduna Abdullah Ibn Abbas رضي الله عنه said:

The messenger of Allah ﷺ used to have a bath on the day of Fitr and the day of Adha.”

(Ibn Majah)

Imam Bayhaqi رحمه الله‎‎ narrates that Sayyiduna Abdullah Ibn Umar رضي الله عنه used to wear his best clothes on Eid.

To go by one route and return by another from the Eid salaah

Sayyiduna Jabir ibn Abdullah رضي الله عنه says, On the Day of Eid, the Prophet ﷺ used to return after offering the Eid prayer through a way different from that by which he went’.

Greeting one another

The Sahabah (companions) would greet one another on the day of Eid with the following words:

تَقَبَّلَ اللهُ مِنَّا وَمِنْكُمْ

Taqabbalallāhu minnā wa minkum

May Allah accept (deeds) from us and from you.
