Daily Lesson 154

Memorise and practice a new hadeeth every week!

By Mawlana Junayd Makda Sahib

Do NOT be arrogant

لَا يَدْخُلُ الْجَنَّةَ مَنْ كَانَ فِي قَلْبِهِ مِثْقَالُ ذَرَّةٍ مِنْ كِبْرٍ

Our Beloved Nabi ﷺ said, “The person who has the weight of a mustard seed of pride in his heart, will not enter Jannah”

Muslim

Explanation

Allah Ta’ala likes us to be humble and to look at others with respect.

On the other hand, Allah Ta’ala dislikes pride and arrogance, because this results in a person looking down at others or thinking special about himself.

In this hadeeth, our beloved Nabi ﷺ informs us that even the smallest amount of pride is disliked so much by Allah Ta’ala that it will delay a person’s entry into Jannah.

What is pride?

Our beloved Nabi ﷺ has said that “Pride is to reject the truth [out of arrogance] and to think others unworthy.” (Muslim)

What we learn from this hadeeth:

1) We should not look down on others.

2) We should not think we are better than others.

3) If the truth becomes apparent in a dispute, we should accept it.

4) We should remember that pride will stop us entering Jannah.

5) We should know that people with pride are not usually liked by others.

6) Remind ourselves that pride stopped shaytaan from obeying Allah Ta’ala.

7) When we wear nice clothes, we should not feel proud. (Allah Ta’ala turns away until he/she removes the clothes)

8) This doesn’t mean we can’t wear nice clothes. In fact, we should, as Allah Ta’ala likes beauty but just make sure we do not think special of ourselves and look down on others.

9) Our beloved Nabi ﷺ despite being so special was the most humble too.

A simple remedy for pride:

Our beloved Nabi ﷺ said, ‘The one who initiates (is the first one to say) the salam is free from pride’ (Bayhaqi)
