Hadeeth Eighteen
Hayaa – Modesty
اَلْحَيَاءُ مِنَ الْإِيمَانِ
Our Beloved Nabi ﷺ said,
“Hayaa is a branch of Imaan”
Muslim
Explanation
Hayaa means to feel shy or ashamed of doing anything that displeases Allah Ta’ala.
It is a quality Allah Ta’ala loves because it keeps us away from sin and helps us to do good.
A person with Hayaa behaves respectfully, speaks politely and truthfully, dresses modestly, obeys Allah Ta’ala, and stays away from sin.
From this Hadeeth we learn that Hayaa is a part of Imaan. The stronger our Imaan, the stronger our Hayaa will be. The weaker our Imaan, the weaker our Hayaa will be.
What we learn from this Hadeeth:
1) Hayaa is an integral part of our Imaan. Without Hayaa our Imaan will be incomplete.
2) Hayaa means modesty and shame. This is a special type of modesty and shame which helps us to stay away from sins because we feel embarrassed and ashamed to disobey our Lord and Creator.
3) A person who has Hayaa will always obey Allah Ta’ala and because of this, he will be respected by people and loved by Allah Ta’ala.
4) We act with Hayaa only for the sake of Allah Ta’ala and not for anyone else. For this reason we remain obedient and good even when no one is watching.
5) Speaking politely and truthfully, dressing modestly, and behaving respectfully are all parts of Hayaa.
6) Hayaa makes us feel shy in front of Allah Ta’ala and makes us ask ourselves, “Would Allah Ta’ala be pleased with this?”
Ways we can practice and show Hayaa:
Our beloved Nabi ﷺ has taught us many amazing ways to control our anger. So the next time we get angry, let’s try these:
1) Dressing modestly and appropriately.
2) Speaking gently, truthfully and politely without using rude or hurtful words, lying or cheating.
3) Lowering the gaze and avoiding anything sinful.
4) Avoiding bad company and places where wrong happens.
5) Feeling regret after committing a mistake and quickly turning back to Allah Ta’ala by repenting (asking Allah Ta’ala for forgiveness)
6) Being respectful towards parents, teachers, and elders.
7) Always being mindful that Allah is watching us.
