Hadeeth Seventeen

Do not become angry

لاَ تَغْضَبْ

Our Beloved Nabi ﷺ said,

“Do not become angry”

Bukhari

Explanation

Everyone feels angry and it is natural to feel angry. However, anger can make us do things we later regret like hurting someone, breaking something or even losing someone close to us. Many a times, anger makes us do things which makes Allah Ta’ala unhappy with us.

For this reason, in this Hadeeth our beloved Nabi ﷺ has advised us to control our anger and not allow it to control us.

What we learn from this Hadeeth:

1) Although it is natural to become angry, we have to learn to control our anger.

2) When we are angry, we do not think clearly and do or say things we later regret.

3) When we are angry, Shaytan controls us and enjoys seeing us make mistakes.

4) Our aim is to avoid getting angry, but if we do get angry then we have to control the anger.

5) When we control our anger, Allah becomes really happy with us and even rewards us!

Ways we can control our anger:

Our beloved Nabi ﷺ has taught us many amazing ways to control our anger. So the next time we get angry, let’s try these:

1) Read Ta’awwuz:
أَعُوْذُ بِاللّٰهِ مِنَ الشَّيْطَانِ الرَّجِيْمِ
(I seek protection from Shaytan)

2) Remain silent. If it helps, take a deep breath and count to 10.

3) Walk away if possible.

4) Change position. If standing up, sit down and if sitting down, recline back towards a position of lying down.

5) If possible perform Wudhu.

6) Remind yourself of the following two very special rewards of controlling anger:

“Whoever controls his anger at the time when he has the means to act upon it,

1. Allah will fill his heart with contentment on the Day of Resurrection.” (Tabarani)

2. Allah will call him before all of mankind on the Day of Qiyamah (Resurrection), and will let him choose from the Hoorul ’Iyn – Wives of Jannah.” (Abu Dawud)
