Hadeeth Eleven

Silence will save a person

مَنْ صَمَتَ نَجَا

Our Beloved Nabi ﷺ said,

“One who remains silent will save himself.”

At-Tirmidhi

Explanation

A believer always tries to adopt the best qualities possible and stays away from those habits or actions which may take him towards the displeasure of Allah Ta’ala. One very special quality, which many do not even recognise to be a good quality, and which is helpful in keeping us away from sin and many troubles of this world is silence (talking less). It is in fact such a special quality that our beloved Nabi ﷺ would himself remain silent for long periods of time!

From this Hadeeth, we are invited towards adopting Silence where required, reminding us that it will save us from many troubles.

What we learn from this Hadeeth?

1) Silence is not something bad. Rather it is something praiseworthy.

2) A person who remains silent will always be better off insha’allah.

3) By keeping the lesson of silence in mind, a person will remain mindful when talking and only say what is required.

4) Some examples of how silence will help us is;

* It will automatically reduce the number of occasions we lie, hurt others and disobey Allah Ta’ala.

* It makes a person less likely to show disrespect to others.

* It will save a person from humiliation (as many occasions people say something that exposes a person’s ignorance or foolishness.)

* It will help a person uphold a higher degree of self-respect.

* It will reduce/stop arguments and disputes.

* It will help stop the spread of gossip and refrain from backbiting.

5) Through silence a person has more chance to observe and learn from others.

6) Through silence we will have less to answer for in the Hereafter.

7) Under silence is also our text messages, email and social media. These are all modern-day methods of speech and one should adopt silence on these platforms too.

8) A huge benefit of silence is a person will save a huge amount of time and trouble which can be used in Deeni practices and pleasing Allah Ta’ala.

9) By remaining silent we automatically are able to focus more on our studies, and we will find more time to listen and learn from the knowledge and experiences of others.

Action Plan:

1) Always think before we speak by asking ourselves, ‘Is what I am about to say good or bad and is there a need for me to speak’.

2) Speak only when there is a need.

3) Follow the prophetic advice of remaining silent, and only speaking when there is something good to say.

4) Keep reminding yourself that safety is in silence and when we do speak there is a chance we may say something wrong.

5) Avoid all forms of haram speech like lying, backbiting, slandering, swearing, making fun of people, spreading rumours and speaking of sin etc.

6) When the opportunity presents itself to say something good, to share knowledge or give advice to someone, then do not remain silent.

7) Keep busy with the Dhikr of Allah Ta’ala and reciting the Qur’an. This will help to remain silent.

8) Allow yourself more chance to listen and learn good and beneficial things from parents, elders and teachers.

9) Finally, think of the following hadeeth every morning in which our beloved Nabi ﷺ said, “When the son of Adam wakes up in the morning, all of his limbs turn towards the tongue and they say: Fear Allah Ta’ala regarding us, for we are only a part of you. If you are upright, we are upright. If you are crooked, we are crooked.”  (Tirmidhi)
