Imam Sarakhsi’s رحمه الله Great Knowledge
Lived from: 400 AH (1009 ) to 483 AH (1091)
Imam Sarakhsi رحمه الله is among the great scholars this ummah has seen. He was especially very well versed in the Hanafi School of thought and was known as Shamsul A’immah.
An incident took place in which Imam Sarakhsi رحمه الله stood up for the truth which deeply angered Khaqan (the ruler of the time).
He ordered the Imam to be arrested and imprisoned him in a well for 15 years!
Daily, food and water was provided for him and other than this he had no access to his books and notes.
His students wished to continue their studies with him, so daily classes were conducted from the well and the great imam taught from memory some of what he had learnt over the years.
His students noted down all of what their respected teacher dictated.
These notes were later published as a book by the name Mabsut (which means enclosed/locked away). This book was extensive that it consisted of thirty volumes!
Subhanallah! How knowledgeable must this great imam have been to dictate such a book while seated in a well without any recourses or a library to refer to!
