Virtues and actions related to the first 10 days of Dhul Hijjah

Dhul Hijjah is the final month of the Islamic year. It is the month of Hajj, Udhiyah/Qurbani and a month to attain rewards and forgiveness.

Facts about the 10 days of Dhul Hijjah

Month Number: 

12th Month of the Islamic calendar

Located: 

During the first 10 days

Significance: 

1) The first 10 days and nights are full of Virtue
2) The Day of Arafah is the day of forgiveness
3) Great actions like Hajj and Udhiyah take place

Let us learn some actions of worship and some benefits of this special month and aim to value it and make the most of it.

Fasting

1. The fast of each day is equal to the fast of an entire year!

2. Remember Sunnah to fast all nine days

Hadeeth:

Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah رضي الله عنه related that Rasulullah ﷺ‎ said, 

“On no days is the worship of Allāh more beloved to Him than in the (first) ten days of Dhul Hijjah. The fast of each of these days is equal to the fast of a whole year….” 

(Tirmidhi)

Hadeeth:

Sayyidah Hafsah رضي الله عنها reports that Rasulullah ﷺ used to fast the (first) nine days of Dhul-Hijjah. 

(Abu Dawud)

Worship at night

The worship of the night during the first 10 days of Dhul Hijjah is equal to Laylatul Qadr!

Hadeeth:

Our beloved Nabi ﷺ‎ has said:

“The worship of each of these nights is equal to the worship of Laylatul-Qadr.’

(Tirmidhi)

Pleasure of Allah Ta’ala

Allah likes the worship of these days so read Quran, do Zikr, engage in dua and do as many good actions as possible.

Hadeeth:

Sayyiduna Abdullah Ibn Abbas رضي الله عنه says that the Prophet ﷺ‎ said,

“No good deeds are better than what is done in these first ten days of Dhul-Hijjah.”

(Bukhari)

Special Words

During these days read the following phrases abundantly:

Subhanallah, La ilaha illallah, Allahu Akbar and Alhamdulillah 

Hadeeth:

Abdullah Ibn Umar رضي الله عنه says that Rasulullah ﷺ‎ said:

“No days are as weighty with Allah and so liked by Him for good deeds than the first ten days of Dhul-Hijjah. So on these days increasingly read:

سُبْحَانَ الْلَّهِ، وَلَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا الْلَّهُ، وَالْلَّهُ أَكْبَرُ، وَالْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ

Subhanallah, wa la ilaha illallah, wallahu Akbar, wal-hamdulillah.
