Sunnah of Pausing after every verse of Surah al-Fatihah

Sunnah of Pausing after every verse of Surah al-Fatihah

We all read Surah al-Fatihah in and out of Salah. How beautiful would it be if we implemented a very simple and beautiful Sunnah of our beloved Nabi ﷺ. When our beloved Nabi ﷺ would read Surah al-Fatihah he would pause in between each verse and not join verses.

When Umm Salamah رضي الله عنها was asked about the recitation of our beloved Nabi ﷺ, she said:

He used to pause after each verse: {Bismillahir Rahmanir Raheem} {Alhamdu lillahi Rabbil Aalameen} {Ar-Rahmanir Raheem} {Maaliki Yawmid Deen}.

(Ahmad and Abu Dawood)

Furthermore, pausing in between verses when reciting Surah al-Fatihah in Salah is a Sunnah which holds even more importance and emphasis. Especially knowing that:

1) It was a habit of our beloved Nabi ﷺ

2) It is a conversation between us and Allah Ta’ala. Which can be learnt from the following hadeeth:

Hadeeth:

Our Beloved Nabi ﷺ said: Allah the Exalted said:

‘I have divided the prayer (Surah al-Fatihah) into two halves between Me and My servant.

A half of it is for Me and a half for My servant, and My servant shall acquire what he asked for.

If he says, “All praise and thanks be to Allah, the Lord of existence,”

Allah (Ta’ala) says, “My servant has praised Me.”

When the servant says, “The Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.”

Allah (Ta’ala) says, “My servant has glorified Me.”

When he says, ‘Master of the Day of Judgment.” Allah says, “My servant has glorified Me.”

When he says, “You (alone) we worship, and You (alone) we ask for help.”

Allah (Ta’ala) says, “This is between Me and My servant, and My servant shall acquire what he sought.”

When he says, “Guide us to the straight path. The way of those on whom You have granted Your grace, not (the way) of those who earned Your anger, nor of those who went astray.”

Allah says, “This is for My servant, and My servant shall acquire what he asked for.” ‘

(Muslim, An-Nasaa’i)

Let us adopt this very simple and special Sunnah of our beloved Nabi ﷺ by:

1.) Reciting each verse of Surah al-Fatihah and pausing after each verse.

2.) Trying to ponder over the meaning if one is able to.

3.) Thinking that one is conversing with Allah Ta’ala.
