Some Sunnah Acts for Eidul Adha
Eidul Adha is a special day of happiness from Allah Ta’ala. It is a day to be happy and a day to eat. So much so that it is forbidden to fast on the day of Eid! Let us learn some sunnah acts we can do on this very special day.
Facts about Eid-ul Adha
Month Number:
It is on the 10th day of the Islamic month Dhul Hijjah
Significance:
1) A day of happiness
2) A day to eat and not fast
3) A day to remember the poor and help them
Here are some sunnah acts for Eidul Adha:
Night Before Eid
We should worship Allah this night as it is known as the night of prize giving!
Sayyidunā Abū ‘Umārah رضي الله عنه relates that Rasūlullāh ﷺ said:
Whoever stays awake and performs ‘ibādah on the night of the two ‘Īds, with hope for abundant reward (from Allāh ta‘ālā), his heart will not die on the day (i.e. Qiyāmah) when all hearts will be dead. (At-Targhīb)
Sunnah 1 – Read the Takbeer
Read the following takbeer frequently until the Imam comes out (for prayer)
الله أكبر، الله أكبر، لا إله إلا الله، والله أكبر، الله أكبر، ولله الحمد
Allāhu Akbar, Allāhu Akbar, Lā ilāha illallāhu wallāhu Akbar,
Allāhu Akbar, Walil lāhil hamd.
“Allāh is Most Great, Allāh is Most Great. There is no God except Allāh and Allāh is Most Great. Allāh is Most Great and all praises be to Allāh.”
Sunnah 2 – To express and show happiness
Hafiz Ibn Hajar Al ‘Asqalani رحمه الله says:
Expressing happiness on ‘Eid, is from the shi’aar (salient features ) of Islam (Fathul Baari)
Sunnah 3 – To do ghusl, wear ones best clothes and apply Itr
Sayyidunā Abdullah Ibn Abbas رضي الله عنه said:
The messenger of Allah ﷺ used to have a bath on the day of Fitr and the day of Adha.” (Ibn Majah)
Bayhaqi narrates that Sayyiduna Abdullah Ibn Umar رضي الله عنه used to wear his best clothes on Eid.
Sunnah 4 – To go by one route and return by another from the Eid salah
Sayyiduna Jabir ibn Abdullah رضي الله عنه says, On the Day of Eid, the Prophet ﷺ used to return after offering the Eid prayer through a way different from that by which he went’.
Sunnah 5 – Greeting one another
The Sahabah (companions) would greet one another on the day of Eid with the following words:
تَقَبَّلَ اللهُ مِنَّا وَمِنْكُمْ
Taqabbalallāhu minnā wa minkum
May Allah accept (deeds) from us and from you.
Other Recommended Actions for Eid Day
1.) To rise early.
2.) To use the miswak.
3.) To dress in an Islamic manner.
4.) To go early and walk to the place for Eid salah.
5.) To avoid eating anything before the Eid salah.
6.) To eat the meat of Udhiya from one’s own offering after the Eid ul Adha salah
