Du’a for cold weather

When winter comes, it brings cold and in some places even freezing weather. It’s not pleasant at all and many of us will know that when it’s cold we just want to stay home and keep warm.

Our beloved Nabi ﷺ has taught us a beautiful Du’a which we should read during very cold winter days.

Du’a for severely cold day

لَا إلٰهَ إلَّا اللّٰهُ مَا أَشَدَّ بَرْدَ هٰذَا الْيَوْمِ أَللّٰهُمَّ أَجِرْنِيْ مِنْ زَمْهَرِيْرِ جَهَنَّمْ

‘La ilaha illalallah ma ashadda barda hadhal yawmi. Allahumma ajirni min zamhareeri jahannam’

Translation: There is no God besides Allah Ta‘ala. How severe is the cold of this day! Oh Allah save me from the cold of Jahannam (Amal ul yawm wal-lalylah)

Our beloved Nabi ﷺ has told us, ‘When a person recites the above Du’a, Allah Ta‘ala says to Jahannam, ‘Indeed, a servant of Mine has sought refuge in Me from you, bear testimony that I have granted him safety from your ‘cold area’ (zamhareer) in Jahannam (Amal ul yawm wal-lalylah)

Fact: It may be of surprise to you that Jahannam also has a cold area. It is severely cold and the cold days we experience should remind us of the cold area in Jahannam called zamhareer.

Sayyiduna ibn Abbas رضي الله عنهما says, ‘The inmates of Jahannam will ask to be rescued from the burning heat of Jahannam. An icy cold wind will be blown upon them, which will cause their bones to ache after which they will beg for heat again.’ (Lataiful Ma’arif)

Did you know? Jahannam by inhaling or exhaling takes two breaths; one in summer and the other in winter. Therefore, the extreme heat that we experience (on earth) is caused by the heat of Jahannam and the severe cold we feel in winter is due to the zamhareer (the extreme cold section of Jahannam).
