Daily Lesson 164
Memorise and practice a new hadeeth every week!
By Mawlana Junayd Makda Sahib
We are all travellers
كُنْ فِي الدُّنْيَا كَأَنَّكَ غَرِيبٌ أَوْ عَابِرُ سَبِيلٍ
Our Beloved Nabi ﷺ said, “Be in this world as if you were a stranger or a traveller along a path.”
Bukhari
Explanation
How we live and spend our time in this life, will determine how our life will be in the hereafter. The hereafter is eternal and therefore it is our permanent place of stay. This means, this world is a temporary place which we are only passing through to reach the hereafter.
In this hadeeth, our beloved Nabi ﷺ reminds us of this very fact by describing us as travellers while in this world. We all know that when we are travelling we are focused on the place we are going to and not the place we are in at the time. Similarly, while in this world, our focus should be the place we are going to. Which as we all know is the hereafter (Jannah or Jahannam). May Allah grant us all Jannah and save us from Jahannam. Ameen
What we learn from this hadeeth:
1) This life and this world along with everything we have in it is for a short time only.
2) Like a traveller, we should not set our heart with the things of this world. Rather we should focus and set it with the things of our destination (hereafter).
3) A journey has difficulties and causes tiredness, but when one reaches the final destination there is time to rest.
4) This journey begins from the time of our birth and finally ends at the time of our death. It is with death that we finally reach our eternal destination.
5) When people pass away, they have not really left us. They have only reached their destination, where we are soon to join them.
Advice by Abdullah Ibn Umar رضي الله عنهما:
“If you make it to the evening, do not wait for the morning. If you make it to the morning, do not wait for the evening (as your journey can end anytime). Take from your health (do good actions) for (the time of) your sickness, and from your life for your death.” (Bukhari)
