Daily Lesson 107

This Weeks Sunnah

The Sunnah of Smiling

Smiling is a beautiful Sunnah of our amazing Nabi ﷺ and it was a natural feature, which was ever-present on the beautiful face of our beloved Nabi ﷺ.

Sayyiduna Abdullah ibn Al-Harith ibn Hazm رضي الله عنه says that he has never seen anyone smiling more than our beloved Nabi ﷺ (At-Tirmidhi)

Jarir ibn Abdullah رضي الله عنه also says that since accepting Islam whenever he met our amazing Nabi ﷺ, he always looked at Jarir رضي الله عنه with a smile.” (Sahih Muslim)

With this, our beloved Nabi ﷺ also encouraged others to smile, saying that meeting a Muslim brother with a smile was a good deed (Sahih Muslim) and also saying that smiling at your brother is an act of Sadaqah (charity) (At-Tirmidhi)

This is a very simple sunnah we can all practice and bring in to our daily lives.

So, what are the benefits of smiling:

1) Our smile will make others happy and this will make Allah Ta’ala happy with us.

2) Our beloved Nabi ﷺ smiled, so by smiling we are following his beautiful Sunnah.

3) Smiling is a positive act and we wish to create positivity within us and around us.

4) Smiling has been described as a good deed so we will get rewarded for this.

5) Smiling has also been derived as a form of charity so we will gain the rewards and benefits of taking out charity.

6) By smiling, we want to show our nature of love, care and good characteristics and make people feel at ease with us.

7) We may just share a meaningless smile with someone, but that smile may make a world of difference to someone experiencing difficulty.

8) Smiling makes us feel happier, makes everyone around us feel happier and helps towards good health. All of which will help us in our worship to Allah Ta’ala.

9) While smiling is recommended, laughing is not, so it should be avoided.

10) By smiling we are giving others the opportunity to read the dua:

أَضْحَكَ اللَّهُ سِنَّكَ

Next week we will Insha’allah learn a few rules and etiquettes regarding joking.
